RHD Vehicles for postal workers

The right (hand drive)

Vehicle for your route

Yes, we can import a right-hand drive (RHD) vehicle that is perfect for Rural and Suburban Mail Carrier (RSMC) routes.

Β

If you are looking for a RHD vehicle for your postal route, vehicles from Japan are ideal as they are a RHD country, with cars that have low mileage and are in great shape.

Β

We are suited to find you one, as we are a licensed used vehicle dealer based in Calgary, and we have helped carriers across the country find the right vehicle for their postal route.

what to get

getting a rhd is easy

we deliver the right one

Most vehicles in Japan are right-hand drive. We can help you get the correct one that holds up to the job.

When searching for a vehicle for your route, we keep in mind many of the factors that other carriers have told us matters most to them:

  • Enclosed cargo area – Most carriers don’t want a sedan or an open bed
  • Parts availability – Your vehicle is your life, and waiting for rare parts doesn’t work. We can guide you to ones with readily available parts
  • Diverse terrain capability – The best vehicle is the one that works for your route’s terrain. If you are on a coast, in the mountains, in the snow, or just around the bend
  • One size doesn’t fit all – You aren’t forced to drive a huge delivery van, so you can choose the size and features that you prefer

Vehicle specifics

decide on the right-sized vehicle for the job

There are a few specifics that should be consider ed when choosing a vehicle type. We have listed some here for consideration, but you should consult the CUPW, Canada Post and your own requisition or route sheet.

You may need a vehicle with:

  • Minimum cargo capacities (typically 50, 100, or 150 cubic feet)
  • A metal roof-top and accessory power outlet for a Canada Post sign and flashing light
  • Window sill between 38″ and 45″ from the ground
  • Fifth door or hatchback to accommodate large parcels
  • Rear-mounted spare tire

Common RSMC imports

Here are examples of vehicles that are most commonly imported for rural and suburban mail carrier routes. Many clients prefer a gasoline-powered compact-utility (CUV) or sport-utility (SUV) vehicle, like these:

Honda CR-V

The same platform family as the CR-V’s sold in Canada, making servicing easy. Relatively cheaper as well.

AuctionsΒ |Β WholesaleΒ |Β Dealers

Toyota Rav4

A model also sold in Canada under the same name, with strong parts availability. A little more expensive than a CR-V.

AuctionsΒ |Β WholesaleΒ |Β Dealers

Toyota Vanguard

Effectively the same as a Rav4, but has a larger engine option and different front fascia. Many powertrain parts available.

AuctionsΒ |Β WholesaleΒ |Β Dealers

Subaru Forester

Great all-wheel drive, with common parts shared with local versions. Serviceable, but fewer made, yet economical pricing.

If you needed more cargo space and possibly a diesel fuel option, here are some more vehicles to consider:

Honda Odyssey

Similar powertrain to other Honda vehicles. Like a tall wagon with extra space. Gasoline only.

Toyota Alphard / Vellfire

Has powertrain options with great parts availability, movable seating for extra space, power door options. Gas only.

Why do we quote this way?

The cost to get you a car from Japan to you depends on where you live. Every province has different tax rates, and inland shipping adds up the further you go from port.

Β

By always quoting the Cleared Customs price, you get a clean, apples-to-apples number – no surprises, no hidden fees lurking after the vehicle lands.

Β

Are you picking it up in Vancouver? This is your final number.

Β

Want it delivered to Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto or anywhere else? We can quote you an extra transportation cost.

Why isn’t there one flat rate?

Two main reasons:

Β

Size matters.

Ocean freight is calculated by volume and weight. A kei car ships for roughly half what a full-size SUV or van costs.

Β

Value matters, too.

GST and Duty are calculated on the vehicle’s value, so pricier cars carry a bit more in taxes. High-value vehicles may also have additional dealer fees from Japan.

Β

Origin matters.

Duty rates vary by where the vehicle as manufactured, not just where it was sold. Japanese-made vehicles currently have 0% duty, European-made vehicles have 6.1% duty, and American-made vehicles have a 25% reciprocal tariff. We stay on top of any changes in duties and tariffs, so your quote will be accurate.

What currency are your prices in?

All Cleared Customs Prices we quote, including inventory on b-pro.ca, are in Canadian dollars (CAD).

Β

Many auction portals ( bids.b-pro.ca, auction.b-pro.ca ) have a dollar option, but know those are United-States dollars (USD), and are for the car, as it sits in Japan.

warranty available

Because your route can’t wait on a breakdown.

As a licensed Alberta car dealer, we can offer optional Lubrico Warranty coverage on qualifying imports. It works like a manufacturer’s warranty: an initial comprehensive period right after purchase, then long-term powertrain covers for the rest of the term.

Term

48 months

Comprehensive Period

3 months / unlimited km
8 months / 12,000 km
12 months / 24,000 km

Powertrain coverage

36 months / 60,000 km
48 months / 80,000 km

Per-claim limit

$3,000
$4,000
$5,000

What is covered:
Engine internals, transmission, transfer case (4wd/awd), differential, turbo/supercharger, seals and gaskets, A/C, electrical, fuel injection, steering, and suspension components. Also includes roadside assistance and breakdown-away-from-home reimbursement. Optional zero-deductible and tech-package coverage available.

We would usually recommend the 4-year plan, as the higher per-claim limit is worth more than the savings on a shorter term, especially on an imported vehicle where parts and labour can add up. Coverage is transferrable if you sell, and if you don’t use it, Lubrico’s double-your-term option can extend it another full term for very little extra.

It is totally optional, but valuable if you think you might need it. We can walk you through it before your vehicle arrives, with no pressure either way.

Yes! RSMCs regularly use personal vehicles, including RHD imports for their routes, as long as the vehicle meets Canada Post’s requirements for the route.

This will be specific to your area, but they often will have minimum cargo capacity (50, 100, 150 cubic foot), a passenger window sill at the right level to easily access a mailbox from within the car (38-45″ from the ground), a fifth door or a hatchback, and a metal roof and power outlet for the sign and light.

Yes! However it depends on the model you choose. Vehicles with a North American equivalent (like the CR-V or Rav4 for example) are the easiest to service locally, with abundant parts. Larger vans like the Hiace have global parts availability, but without a similar vehicle locally, parts may need to be ordered from Japan. Clients often order parts in advance, to have them on hand if and when needed.

About 3 months from purchase in Japan to landing in Vancouver.

Yes. As a licensed dealer in Calgary, we can offer Lubrico extended warranty coverage on qualifying vehicles. You would want to check for participating mechanics in your area.

Japan is much smaller than Canada and urban areas very dense with well-used public transportation, both reducing the need for car use. Fuel, parking and traveling over many toll bridges have higher costs, discouraging frequent car travel.

Enthusiast vehicles sometimes have their odometers changed, but this is often noted on the auction sheet with an asterisk (*) or a dollar sign ($). It is common for cars with an automatic to manual swap to change clusters, or if they want to increase the displayed speed from the normal 180kph to one of about 300kph, as offered by tuning outfits like TRD, Nismo, etc.
